◎简 介
Capturing the nuances and subtleties of an emotionally charged subject, such as a parent-child relationship on celluloid, is a gutsy affair. And if the parent is autistic, you’d expect the treatment to be extra-sensitive. Harry Baweja sure has made a gutsy attempt, but the treatment is definitely not sensitive. In the end, the Indianised version of I Am Sam, is reduced to nothing but a cheap tearjerker lacking both in depth and character.
Indraneel Thakur aka Neel (Devgan), though mentally-challenged, is the doting father to his seven-year-old daughter Gungun (Rucha), whose mother Maya (Deol) deserted them. Neel’s world revolves around his little girl, the cafe he works at and its owner and his houseowner, Ritu Didi (Lilette Dubey).
Life may not have been a bed of roses for the father-daughter duo, yet they find happiness in everything around them and love each other immensely. Trouble erupts when Maya’s business tycoon dad Trivedi (Anupam Kher) drops in to claim the custody of his granddaughter. Desperate to take Gungun with him, Trivedi drags the duo to court.
With Trivedi several notches ahead in his battle for custody, it’s time for Neel’s lawyer Neeti Khanna (Sen) to perform a miracle and keep father and daughter together.
Does Neeti succeed or does Trivedi prove that Neel is incapable of caring for his daughter? No prizes for guessing that one though.
Ajay Devgan’s attempt to play an autistic father, a role made memorable by Sean Penn in the original, comes a cropper. He makes a sincere effort but ends up looking like a buffoon more often. Baby Rucha does justice to her complex role and steals the show. Sushmita Sen is a revelation as the no nonsense lawyer with great attitude. Sans a glamorous image, she enacts her part well and looks stunning in her designer formal wear. Sadly, Esha Deol has an ill-conceived role that doesn’t allow her to do anything beyond shedding tears, puffing on fags and showing off her svelte figure. Main Aisa Hi Hoon’s biggest flaw lies in the fact that the crux of the story — human relations — are not explored, which explains why it lacks warmth and leaves you cold.
