The Bravados is in a lot of ways unbelievable, but I have several reasons for rating it highly. Gregory Peck is excellent as the cold-eyed, single-minded 'hunter' hell-bent on revenge. He's much more of a hard, cool killer than the four men he's chasing, from the evidence we see. He seems to realise this by the end. Of the four men he's sworn to catch up with and remove from the world, Lee van Cleef and Stephen Boyd come across as most memorable. The girls - Joan Collins as Peck's old flame, and Kathleen Gallant as the unfortunate hostage - have less to do (although the scene in the ranch house when Gallant is assaulted is done exceptionally well). Henry King's direction is sure and steady, he follows his characters and sets them in a glorious landscape (it really helps that this movie was filmed in colour), then sets the plot moving through revenge, religion, and redemption. It might be weak in some of its plotlines, particularly concerning how quickly Peck returns to his ranch, and how Collins appears to be his salvation after all, but that aside, it is a good western which is ahead of its time in some ways and is compelling viewing.
