◎简　　介　
This 1947 film is a masterpiece. It has, since it premiered, become a classic and continues to impress me. Made as a B rated film, it was directed by the great Edmund Goulding and written by Jules Furthman from a novel by William Lindsay Gresham.

It's a dark story revolving around a seedy carnival troupe, much like FREAKS, that has that gorgeous Tyrone Power as a carnival barker that turns into The Great Stanton, an elegant mind-reader. His career and ambition get the best of him as he heads downward fast. His fate turns him into taking a job as the carnival geek, to keep the booze flowing which he depends on to keep going.

Tyrone Power turns in one of his better performances. He's given more than the glamor leading man type role he usually is forced to play by the studio. Here, he shows his true acting spirit. I think this is his top performance along with THE RAZOR'S EDGE, another great film noir. He's not afraid to look the part of the geek, where the make up department went to great pains to cover up his more than handsome features. Bravo, Tyrone.

Along the way to his destruction he runs into the likes of three ladies that take him for a ride. Joan Blondell, as Zeena, the fortune teller, plays her role to the hilt, even predicting his demise in the tarot cards. Then comes along lovely Coleen Gray, new to the studio lot, as a young carnival act who loves Power, marries him and is then forced to leave him, by his request, when he is caught in a major swindle. And finally Helen Walker comes along and takes Power for a ride, deceiving him into thinking she can make him rich and famous when all the time she is stabbing him in the back. Good acting from all these ladies.
