"Kaunas Jazz festival is the youngest in comparison with other ones. This year it is celebrating its tenth anniversary. There is no doubt that it is the most powerful and longest festival in the country at this time" (Oleg Molokojedov, "Jazz kvadrat", 2000)

The international Kaunas Jazz festival was the modest in 1991. Artistic vision and organizing structure has been changing responding to the realities of the time and experience of its organizers despite of the complicated economic and political situation of the country. Its artistic vision and organizing structure has improved much.

In the first Kaunas Jazz festival distinctive stylistic research has been done in order to make festival attractive. Unique traditions were created. At the same time the organizers were forming and growing an audience favorable to jazz.

During fourteen years of its existence Kaunas Jazz has deserved confidence of its performers, audience supporters, has justified the status of the international festival, gained its prestige. Polystylistic, democratic festival has become a holiday for Kaunas, the lead "importer" of jazz stars in Lithuania, the creative center of different international jazz styles. Every year Kaunas Jazz presents a wide and rich spectrum of modern jazz. Participants from more than 20 countries of the world have taken part in the festival. Kaunas Jazz doesn't forget Lithuanian musicians as well, which get excellent possibilities to improve themselves and to make Lithuanian jazz known in the world.

In support of the Vilnius and Kaunas dipolis idea, the 14 thKaunas Jazz was entitled the International Two City Festival. The jazz fiesta took place during the week of 20-27 April. During this week 27 concerts were held, 13 of which were free.

This time bikers announced the start of Kaunas Jazz 2004 to the city. A noisy column of motorbikes started off at the Town Hall square and drove through the old town and along Laisv?s Avenue to ?gulos Church . They were accompanied by improvising jazz musicians.

In 2004 jazz was played at both traditional and new venues, such as The House of Art Art Gallery, Kaunas Town Hall, Vytautas Magnus University Concert Hall, the Courtyard of the War Museum, Vienyb?s Square, restaurant-club ?emyn upe, Siena night club, Combo club, the churches of Vytautas Magnus and Jurgis Matulaitis the Blessed in Eiguliai, Kaunas synagogue, Vilnius Congress Palace, and Vilnius Town Hall. Jazz was to be heard at the modern Business Leaders Centre BLC, which was opened during the festival. The Earth Wind & Fire Experience concert held at the Kaunas Sports Hall became the culmination of the festival.

This, the fourteenth festival featured jazz musicians from Lithuania, Holland, Latvia, Estonia , Norway , Poland , Finland , Israel , Italy , Bulgaria , and the UA. For the first time Hungarian musicians joined in. As for international stars, the American jazz artists Randy Brecker, Greg Osby, and Roy Hargrove stood out.

In 2004, as the years before, Kaunas Jazz amounted to a colourful and eventful fiesta. Photo exhibitions, fashion shows, a children’s pavement drawing competition, air balloon flights, and festive fire works among other events organised as part of the festival, were aimed not only at jazz lovers but the general public too.

he final note of the festival was the charity event Birds and Children Can Also Fly at the Vilnius Town Hall , organised in co-operation with the KindHeart Club. Next to famous Lithuanian musicians, foreign celebrities - the guitar player Hernan Romero and the trumpeter Roy Hargrove - took part in it. The money collected during the event was used to build a winter garden at Vilnius University Children‘s hospital.
