◎简　　介　

　Following the assasination of Mrs. Indira Gandhi, the Prime Minister of India, at the hands of her Sikh bodyguards, a wave of violence broke out against innocent Sikhs and their families. Pressure was also brought on the police to bring the assasins and their allies to justice. The police, with their limited resources, and the lack of any witnesses, brutally resorted to bringing in innocent sikh men and women, and aggressively interrogated them with third degree methods. This created a wave of sympathy for the extremists, and more people started joining them to revolt against an oppressive regime. This story is of one such family, consisting of Veerandra (Tabu), her brother Kripal Singh (Pali), and her mom. One day Inspector Vohra (Kanwaljeet) comes to their house with a police escort to find out the whereabouts of Jimmy or Jaimal (Jasjit Shergill). Pali playfully introduces the police party to his pet dog Jimmy, and he taken away for questioning. He returns several days later bleedly and badly wounded. Veerandra's boyfriend Jaswant Singh or Jassi (Raj Zutshi) vows to avenge Pali's beating and joins up with Commander (Kulbhushand Kharbanda), and Sanataan (Om Puri) both extremists.

                    [Plot Summary]

  Cast: Om Puri, Tabu, Chandrachur Singh, Kanwaljit, Kulbhushan Kharbanda

  Story: Gulzar's directorial venture, Maachis (Hindi for match sticks),
  is set against the backdrop of the Bluestar Operation and the
  assassination of the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, but interwoven
  with the plot of the spine chilling drama is a tender love story that
  hopes to reach its culmination. The tale takes off with the detention
  of Chandrachur's close friend by the police on the suspicion of being
  linked with the attack on a politician in Delhi. The third degree
  treatment meted out to his bosom pal makes Chandrachur bitter as well
  as angry. He meets Om Puri, sent from across the border and part of a
  gang of militants, and their boss Kulbhushan. He also comes across some
  more youths who, like him, had undergone deep trauma over the incidents
  in Punjab and the riots in Delhi which left hundreds of innocents
  killed and many Sikh families devoid of their men. A moving account
  then takes place that is reminiscent of the events that took place in
  Punjab.
