Based on the novel by Lidia Jorge.

Mozambique, the late 1960s. After an idyllic wedding to mathematician-turned-soldier Luis, glamorous Evita finds her married life to be a prison. Effectively confined to a decaying hotel with the other military wives, she notes occasional signs of trouble (bodies of dead Africans washed ashore one morning, news broadcasts detailing township after township falling to rebel forces), but is reluctant to contemplate their implications. Finally, though, she must confront the truth, and acknowledge the horrific atrocities committed by her new husband and their countrymen. Exquisitely paced, tense and engrossing throughout, this understated drama, shot in the muted tones of a 60s postcard, packs an almighty punch.
