◎简　　介　

故事发生于1807年的法国。一位才华横溢的作家——萨德侯爵（乔弗瑞·拉什饰），因为所著小说中含有大量性爱情节而声名狼籍，并被当时的统治者拿破仑视为异类，关入了疯人院，由一名“心理医生”（迈克尔·凯恩饰）监视治疗。萨德没有因此改变自己的创作风格。相反，舆论和权势的压迫使他更加执着，仿佛是一种冲破传统桎梏的使命在不停的激励着他。
　　经营疯人院的考尔麦神父为人大度耿直，在同德萨德长期相处中，对他渐生好感。尽管考尔麦神父也不喜欢萨德的作品，但两人还是结成挚友。期间，还有一名经常出入疯人院的少女（凯特·温斯莱特饰），她是萨德的仆人。德萨德的每一部作品都是由这名少女偷偷的带到外面，得以流传于世。
　　尽管萨德对抗传统文化的行为从一开始就注定要失败，但他创作的现实题材的小说却给予了当时人们思想上一次强烈的冲击，其意义是非常深远的。
