本片改编自《三国演义》之「连环计」，由四届亚洲影后林黛饰演貂蝉。剧情讲述汉朝末年，太师董卓(罗维 饰)专权祸国，诸侯群起声讨。忠臣王允(杨志卿 饰)利用貂蝉的美色，离间董卓和其义子吕布(赵雷 饰)，终使父子反目，吕布杀了董卓，并和貂蝉成为眷属。

　 汉末，太师董卓(罗维)专横祸国，与义子吕布《赵雷》狼狈为奸，百姓流亡。民女貂婵(林黛)父母惨死途中，婵只身行抵长安，幸得司徒王允(杨志卿)收留。一夜，王允遥见貂婵对月跪祷，颇有愤奸忧国之词。王允大为感动，劝貂婵为国效力。婵毅然答应。
　　王允利用董卓与吕布好色之弱点，多次设计令貂婵周旋於他们父子之间。先将貂婵明配吕布，又暗献董卓，将三角恋爱来拆散父子间的感情。貂婵巧言令色，极尽媚惑，既抓住吕布，又不放松董卓，双方讨好，两面挑勃，使他们关系由於互双猜忌而变成矛盾，仇视，到势不两立。终於吕布『冲冠一怒为红颜』，愤而杀死董卓。
　　王允并未因此罢休，令貂婵杀吕布以斩草除根。貂婵怀著千种愁、万种爱的复杂心情於庆功宴中手持双剑献舞，欲趁机刺杀吕布。几次於心不忍，在千一发之际，貂婵突然自刺，幸及时被吕布所救。王允恐怕败事，又察觉二人乃真心相爱，遂答应将婵嫁吕布，一车一马同返长安。
