Kaji Meiko, best known in the west for her two revengefilms where she plays Lady Snowblood, with a secondaryfollowing for her earliest films which are demeaningsexploitation films, her best work after Lady Snowbloodremains practically unknown in the west. In DoubleSuicide of Sonezaki she is at the height of her physicalbeauty. When the starcrossed lovers get to the climacticsuicide scene, it is stretched out & stretched out inlurid detail & their white garments are totally encrimsonedby the time they have finished the horrific chore. Yet itdoes not play out hammy or exploitative, it is the saddestmost edge-of-the-seat intensity of emotion, a bloodytearjerker infused with aesthetic gorgeousness that leavesthe viewer awed & drained.
