　　帕特里克-贝特曼(克里斯蒂安-贝尔)是一位富有的华尔街金融家的儿子。他是一个典型的雅皮士，拥有成功的事业、名牌服装和作为一名“高等人类”所必需的一切。但令人意想不到的是，他还是一名嗜杀成性的连环杀手，任何人都可能成为他无缘无故残杀与强奸的对象。他高贵的身份使得调查这一系列罪案的警官从未把他列为嫌疑对象，而另外一名同样嗜血的杀人狂却想作下一件更为血腥的案子，成为真正的杀手之王。
　　帕特里克-贝特曼的杀人动机非常简单：物欲横流的华尔街使他成为一名极端的拜金主义者，他不能与这个世界存在任何物质上的差距，别人的些许优势都会招来他异常的嫉妒和憎恨。《纽约时报》专栏作家克里斯托弗-莱曼-豪普特的描述可谓一语中的：“帕特里克-贝特曼生活在一个道德贫乏的世界里，在这个世界里，衣服比皮肤更重要，财富比血液更重要，灵魂的探究只能靠刀子、斧子和钻头。”
　　布莱特-伊斯顿-艾利斯的《美国狂人》是20世纪90年代最受抨击的一部小说，其极度黑暗的笔调使得小说及其作者都成了当时舆论猛烈炮轰的目标。时至今日，在这部小说出版近十年之后，其观点已经被部分人接受，将其搬上银幕才成为可能。但本片的开拍还是引起了激烈争论，曾受邀出演主角的里奥纳多-迪卡普里奥很快便宣布退出，剧组不得不重新起用原定的男主角克里斯蒂安-贝尔。宣称这部小说的灵感来自他的系列案件。
　　本片男主角克里斯蒂安-贝尔13岁时因主演斯皮尔伯格的《太阳帝国》(Empire of Sun，1987 )而成名。
