　　Maggie Reilly (born September 15, 1956 in Glasgow) is a Scottish vocalist best known for her collaborations with the composer Mike Oldfield between 1980 and 1984, especially by co-writing and performing the vocals on "Family Man" and other tracks on the album Five Miles Out (1982), "Moonlight Shadow" (1983), "Foreign Affair" (1983), and "To France" (1984). She was part of the 1970s pub-rock outfit Cado Belle, and released one album with them in 1976.

　　In 1992, she issued her debut solo album Echoes, from which the singles "Everytime We Touch", "Tears in the Rain" and "Wait" were the most successful, followed by Midnight Sun (1993), Elena (1996), Starcrossed (2000), Save It for a Rainy Day (2002) and Rowan (2006).

　　She has also worked with many other artists, including Mike Batt (on his Hunting of the Snark album), Jack Bruce, Dave Greenfield & Jean-Jacques Burnel, Rick Fenn, Michael Cretu, Lesiëm, Ralph McTell, Simon Nicol (of Fairport Convention), Runrig, The Sisters of Mercy, and Smokie.

Bandleader and musical provocateur Carla Bley is   
  the Hector Berlioz of jazz. Her command of her      
  large ensembles is complete and potent. Her         
  composition, arrangement, and adaptation are        
  intelligent with a sophisticated sense of humor. A  
  superb pianist, Bley's true talent lies in her      
  ability to define and then guide an orchestra      
  through her arrangements without veering off into   
  parts unknown. Her relationship with big bands is   
  long lived, beginning in the late 1960s, including  
  the recordings Looking For America (ECM, 2003), The
  Carla Bley Big Band Goes to Church (ECM, 1996), Big
  Band Theory (ECM, 1993), and The Very Big Carla     
  Bley Band (ECM, 1990).                              
                                                      
  The centerpoint of Appearing Nightly is the         
  25-minute suite 揂ppearing Nightly at the Black     
  Orchid.?The suite extends the Berlioz comparison   
  by manifesting as 損rogram?jazz. Like Berlioz's   
  Symphonie Fantastique, 揂ppearing Nightly at the   
  Black Orchid?is a multiple-part composition that   
  tells a story with music. Section 1: ?0 on/20 off?
  alludes to jazz artists playing 40 minute sets with
  20 minute intermissions.                           
                                                      
  The section begins with an eccentric Bley survey of
  jazz piano literature. The solo piano opening is a  
  dead ringer for 揗y Foolish Heart?with            
  interpolations of 揂s time Goes By.?This abruptly  
  gives way to a bassist Steve Swallow-drummer Billy  
  Drummond duet soon interrupted by a Bley hallmark:  
  low brass and reeds weaving in and out as if tuning
  and in the process building toward a consonant      
  crescendo that leads into a spontaneous tenor      
  saxophone counterpoint and riffs, just as if the   
  listener had walked in the door mid-tune. From      
  there, the concert is in full swing.               
                                                      
  Section 2: 揝econd Round?musically details the     
  evening in full swing with low brass conversation   
  dominated by a lengthy trombone solo, both Bley     
  touchtones. Bley likes the rasp of muted and full   
  bell 'bones and allows her collaborators full      
  reign. This is followed by a more full-throated     
  tenor saxophone solo that brings the section to a   
  silent end. Section 3: 揥hat Would You Like to      
  Here?takes on a 1930s Duke Ellington ambiance with
  a plunger muted trumpet solo delivered over the     
  plush bed of the full horn section and then, Bley's
  piano, which flows into her own solo.               
                                                      
  Section 4: 揕ast Call?closes the suite on an      
  upbeat note. Swallow further reveals his importance
  to the Bley big band sound with his high-register   
  playing. More raspy trombone peppers the piece over
  muted, then open-bell brass, propels the piece to   
  its conclusion. The suite is slightly palandromic,  
  recalling motifs from Section 1 as the solo         
  instruments are given eight bars alternating into a
  quote-heavy coda.                                   
                                                      
  擜weful Coffee?sports a Julian Argu"elles baritone
  saxophone solo that meanders all over the map,      
  introducing the piece. It is also a tunefest with   
  quotes from 揝alt Peanuts,?揧ou're the Cream in My
  Coffee,?揥atermelon Man,?揕ife is Just a Bowl of  
  Cherries,?揌ey Pete, Let's Eat More Meat,?and     
  揟ea for Two?(note all having a food motif).      
  揋reasy Gravy?slows down the tempo to a strut      
  again featuring low reeds and brass in solos before
  Bley takes things for a spin herself. Bley mixes   
  old and new arrangement forms on 揑 Ain't Had Nyone
  Till You?and 揝omeone to Watch,?quoting the Great
  American Songbook liberally and intelligently.      
                                                      
  Comparisons of Bley's big band talents to Ellington
  and Charles Mingus are not hyperbole. In a field   
  crowded with every measure of big bands, Carla      
  Bley's Big Band stands as one of the most inventive
  and unique ensembles.

　　Dunn and Mike Pride, her duos with Jessica Pavone   

　　and Kevin Shea and a number of other projects,      

　　guitarist Mary Halvorson might have gone any number

　　of directions with her debut as a bandleader. Safe  

　　bet it would include some precise, proficient      

　　playing, probably some jagged edges and maybe some  

　　noise. But in the last few years Halvorson has      

　　shown there to be a number of tricks up her sleeve.

　　With Dragon's Head, she seems to have decided to go

　　all directions at once and quite tidily. She wrote  

　　the ten pieces on the disc specifically for the     

　　band桱ohn Hebert on bass and Ches Smith on         

　　drums梐nd they rise well to what's been put before  

　　them. While some of her projects have leaned toward

　　avant rock and sui generis song, Dragon's Head is   

　　an instrumental record of slippery jazz. The first  

　　track, "Old Nine Two Six For Two Dies (No. 10)"     

　　(showing her commitment to the band project, the   

　　tracks are numbered to show the order they were     

　　composed in) is the last piece she wrote for the   

　　album and jazziest cut on the disc, a laid back     

　　number with plenty of melody, her electric guitar   

　　almost pianistic at times. It serves not so much as

　　a framework in its placement here but as a         

　　departure point for the rest of the record.         

　　The disc quickly nosedives (quite gloriously) into  

　　rockier glades. The second track introduces her     

　　deft use of effects, heavy distortion and rubbery   

　　pitch-shifting. The rest of the album is dedicated  

　　to charting the grounds between: extreme layering   

　　of tempos; unison passages that pound a different   

　　punk-prog than has been heard before and            

　　unaccompanied solos (by all three) that challenge   

　　as much as the composed segments do. But remarkably

　　Dragon's Head never feels de-contextualized; the   

　　rugs might change, but they're not pulled out from  

　　under you.

　　The German ritual drone project Vortex is dedicated to the      

　　British art movement of Vorticism of the early Twentieth Century

　　(1913-1920). Founded as an own vision of Futurism by Wyndham   

　　Lewis and expressed in the legendary magazine Blast (1914)      

　　Vorticism defined the artist as someone gaining creative power  

　　and inspiration out of the chaotic vortex of creative energy.   

　　The name was introduced by the Vorticist protagonist Ezra Pound

　　who also coined the phrase 'phanopoeia': the idea of creating

　　fantastic music, they can also spot it from a mile off.

　　What makes this album sparkle is its prettiness. While Mogwai did sterling work

　　smashing up the rock formulae, Remember Remember shun their patrons?

　　eight-minute crescendos for something far more serene and delicate. The riffs

　　are repetitive but subtle, creating a lush, calming scene - it抯 the soundtrack

　　to a shower of rain in summer, or the sun setting behind the mountains. There

　　are no sudden twists and turns, no outbreaks of violence, just smooth, unbroken

　　flights of fancy.

　　Mainly the work of Glaswegian Graeme Ronald, Remember Remember抯 tone is created

　　through the layering of minimal riffs on top of each other: pianos, guitars,

　　glockenspiels, violins and synths. He expands on that with plenty of homemade

　　nonsense, listing various 搃nstruments?such as bubblewrap, coins, Irn-Bru, a

　　wind-up monkey and a rubber shark. The result is spell-binding.

　　See it like this: if Errors get you in the mood for a night out, and Fuck

　　Buttons represent the decadent thrill-seeking as you swallow your poison of

　　choice and clatter into the early hours, then Remember Remember are the saving

　　grace, the headache soother, the reminder that there抯 a new day dawning, full

　　Saxophonist Paul Shapiro has really out-done        

　　himself on his third album as a bandleader.         

　　Entitled Essen, the music is served up with         

　　elements of Yiddish swing, soulful blues, gospel   

　　chant and theatre-cabaret wind up in gypsy-punk     

　　cables, hip-hop landings and 揃orscht Belt humor,?

　　which Shapiro refers to as the comedians who        

　　entertain at the hotels in Upstate New York憇      

　　Catskill Mountains. If that means nothing to you,   

　　then think of Jackie Mason抯 humor and you抣l grasp

　　the idea. The term 揺ssen?is Yiddish for 揺at?and

　　Shapiro has delivered a viable smorgasbord for      

　　people to eat up with songs made famous by Peggy   

　　Lee, Cab Calloway, Sophie Tucker, Mildred Bailey,   

　　Slim Gaillard and the Barton Brothers. The         

　　jocularity and swing-jazz vibe in the tracks have a

　　big stage personality and presage a trend for      

　　Yiddish/klezmer accents to modernize songs that     

　　have laid dormant for years. Paul Shapiro was just  

　　the guy to do it.                                   

　　The album goes back to 40s jazz with numbers like   

　　揗ama Goes Where Papa Goes,?which is beautifully   

　　tailored to Cillia Owens?husky vocal timbres with  

　　a likeness to the lush moans of Sarah Vaughan, and  

　　揙y Veys Mir,?delivered fabulously by singer Babi  

　　Floyd. The rhythm section in these tunes make you   

　　want to join in the revelry on stage. Comprising of

　　pianist Brian Mitchell, bassist Booker King and     

　　drummer Tony Lewis, the jumps in the rhythmic      

　　grooves move from a sultry, swing-blues slugging to

　　flamboyant rollicking shakes. The horn section of   

　　Shapiro on saxophone, Steven Bernstein and Frank   

　　London on trumpet and Doug Wieselman on clarinet   

　　have vibrant klezmer-flange and soulful-blues      

　　shadings. The upbeat klezmer jive of 揇unkin Bagel?

　　induces laughter while the Yiddish-soul laden licks

　　of 揢tt-Da-Zay?feel like a funeral service with a  

　　theatre-cabaret style. The dazzling breadth of the  

　　piano keys on 揢tt-Da-Zay?are brilliantly scrolled

　　and turn to a snazzy bebop throttle along 揂 Bissel

　　Bop.?                                             

　　Maybe the most impressive track on the album is the

　　first cone 揈ssen,?which is a massive collage of   

　　Yiddish swing, theatre-cabaret, gypsy-punk and      

　　hip-hop thrusts. What 揃ohemian Rhapsody?is to     

　　Queen, 揈ssen?is to Paul Shapiro. He seams various

　　music styles and forms a saucy cohesive storyline.  

　　The entwining patterns are a great challenge that   

　　takes the mind of a genius. Though 揈ssen?is the   

　　only song of its kind on the album, it is enough to

　　bring together music from different cultures and   

　　maybe even its people.                              

　　Shapiro calls his sonic collage an 揂fro-Semitic   

　　mish-mash,?as he revives 40s Jewish-tinged jazz   

　　that became a staple in the repertoire of black     

　　jazz singers, such as Billy Eckstine, Eartha Kitt   

　　and Sammy Davis Jr. Essen is a look at what was in  

　　the heart of Shapiro抯 Ribs And Brisket Revue,      

　　which he performed with his band in the basement of

　　Cornelia Street Cafe' in New York City. Shapiro抯   

　　music pays homage to the sacred musical traditions  

　　of Jewish heritage while exhibiting true Jackie     

　　Mason tact. Shapiro injects spurts of laughter into

　　the music because what would life be without those  

　　moments of happiness?
