        醫生丈夫大衛（《新娘不是我》德莫穆隆尼飾）親自為妻子諾拉（《愛情十賤事》 葛麗倩摩兒）接生，卻發現雙胞胎之一的女嬰患有唐氏症。大衛想起自己十二歲時離開人世的妹妹，母親因此再也沒有笑過，為了不讓妻子面對新生女兒為心智障礙的悲劇，大衛請接生護士卡洛琳把女嬰送到安養院，矇騙諾拉女兒已夭折。
原本以為這個善意謊言，能夠為家庭帶來平靜的大衛，看見妻子因為無法走出失去孩子的陰影，而開始酗酒、外遇，失去渴求關愛的獨子保羅，則不斷和雙胞胎妹妹幽靈糾纏，滿心愧疚的大衛，才明白一切都已無法挽回....。
但是當年在場的護士卡洛琳並沒有按照大衛要求將小女嬰送到安養機構，在開車離去的途中，卡洛琳決定獨自把女嬰養大。她搬到另一個城市，隱姓埋名靠各式各樣的兼差賺取生活費，用一己之力對抗不合理的教育體制，為女兒打造出一個溫暖有愛的家...。
本片改編自金．愛德華茲（Kim Edwards）暢銷同名小說，由米克傑生（Mick Jackson）執導，講述一個善意的謊言，造成兩個家庭悲劇的故事。
