弥次郎兵卫和喜多八这对结伴同行的活宝在日本可谓是家喻户晓的人物。此番由歌舞伎名角中村勘三郎和实力派老演员柄本明联手饰演弥次喜多，小泉今日子的花魁为这一路上更添热闹。各种古典落语的典故穿插期间，为影片带来独特的喜剧风味。

江户时代，天下太平。大阪有人捕到了传说中的奇鱼，街头巷尾议论纷纷。与此同时，江户品川的妓楼“岛崎”依然是歌舞升平。花魁喜乃请匠人弥次郎兵卫做了一只假的断指，将之作为爱的信物赠予客人，收得了一大笔钱。喜乃认为弥次对她有意思，强要弥次带她离开妓楼。门外不卖座的歌舞伎演员喜多因为在台上出了大丑正准备上吊，不料竟惊动了屋里人。弥次和喜多两人从小一起长大，偶然重逢十分高兴。他们合力帮助喜乃逃出了妓楼，三人一起远走高飞，踏上了愉快的旅程……
