Play “holy shit, I remember that” as George A. Romero enthusiast Nicolas Garreau travels from Paris, France to Pittsburg, PA to seek-out some of the most famous locations in horror-film history.
Hey everybody, I just watched some French dudes vacation video! Only, instead of jittery shots of places like The Louvre or the canals of Venice, I got to see things like the cemetery from ‘Night of the Living Dead’ and the Monroeville Mall from ‘Dawn of the Dead.’ Cool huh? Yeah, that’s what I though too as I gave Nicolas Garreau’s novice but charming little mini-documentary ‘Fan of the Dead’ a spin. Garreau’s intention (as he tells us in the opening minutes of ‘Fan’) is to hit-up Pittsburg for the 25th anniversary celebration of ‘Dawn of the Dead’ and capture, on tape, as many Romero-centric filming locations as he can. For all intensive purposes, the crazy bastard actually succeeds.
Not only are we privy to the goings-on at the ‘Dawn’ convention (and where the hell was I when this went down?), but we also get to tag-along as Garreau heads to horrordoms most famous nuclear-powered shopping center, The Monroeville Mall! And as if that wasn’t groovy enough, our guide on this gruesome trip down memory lane is non-other than super bad-ass acting god, Ken Foree. Not a bad vacation if you ask me.
While not a documentary in the classical sense, (‘Fan of the Dead’ is more akin to something you might find on The Travel Channel), and nowhere remotely close to “produced”, there is no denying the fact that Garreau wears his passion for Romero’s films proudly. You’ve got to respect that, man. It’s funny, somewhere along the way I actually found myself envying this Garreau guy. He’s walked, first-hand, through the military bunker in ‘Day of the Dead.’not to mention he’s ridden ‘Flyboy’s’ ill-fated elevator from ‘Dawn of the Dead.’ Hell, Garreau even managed to find the actual hallway from ‘The Crate’ segment from ‘Creepshow’ and the basement location from the original ‘Night of the Living Dead’. That’s just plain cool. All of this is presented with such a wonderful, child-like air of amazement on behalf of Garreau that it becomes infectious.
