Stomness(r) Whaling Station, South Georgia Island, Falkland Islands, 1998
Photograph by Maria Stenzel
Seals inhabit an abandoned whaling station on South Georgia's Stromness Bay. The whaling station on South Georgia was the only hope of survival for Ernest Shackleton and his crew who were trapped on ice floes for 9 months over 800 miles away from inhabited land.
(Text adapted from and photograph shot on assignment for, but not published in, "Epic of Survival: Shackleton," November 1998, National Geographic magazine.)

Zambezi River, 1996
Photograph by Chris Johns
A baby African elephant takes a sand bath along the banks of the Zambezi River, where poachers wreak havoc on the elephant population. Armed with AK-47s, poachers hunt adult male elephants, cut their heads off, then hack away at their tusks leaving the massive bodies to the vultures, hyenas, and lions.

Off Rongelap Atoll, Marshall Islands, Micronesia, 1996
Photograph by Emory Kristof
A photographer enjoys the protection of his shark cage as many healthy and hungry gray reef sharks patrol the area. Scientists were sent to Rongelap Atoll to study the lingering effects of a nuclear mega-bomb detonated by the United States there in 1954. Despite the disturbing number of abnormal births and other radiogenic illnesses affecting the human population, life below the surface of Rongelap seemed to be quite healthy in 1996.
(Text adapted from and photograph shot on assignment for, but not published in, "Testing the Waters of Rongelap," April 1998, National Geographic magazine.)

Atlantic Ocean off the Coast of Nova Scotia, Canada, 1997
Photograph by Flip Nicklin
About 235 miles (378 kilometers) east of Halifax, the ocean floor drops away. Nicknamed The Gully,
this place is more like a drowned Grand Canyon, measuring a dozen miles (19 kilometers) across and,
in places, a mile (1.6 kilometers) straight down to the bottom. These deep waters are home to the
immense—and immensely curious—bottlenose whales, whom scientists believe to be the deepest divers
of all ocean mammals.
(Text adapted from and photograph shot on assignment for "A Journey Down Old U.S. 1," December 1984, National Geographic magazine)

Bandhavgarh National Park, Madhya Pradesh, India, 1996
Photograph by Michael Nichols
In an image taken by a remotely operated 35-mm camera, a baby langur monkey clings to his mother's
chest in India's Bandhavgarh National Park. Photographer Michael Nichols set up the cameras to capture tigers in action, but the active langur monkeys tripped the infrared beam thousands of times a day, using up so many rolls of film that he had to adjust the timer to operate during "tiger time" —late afternoon, when tigers prepared for their nightly hunt.
(Text adapted from and photograph shot on assignment for, but not published in, "Sita: Life of a Wild Tigress," December 1997, National Geographic magazine)
