著名女星凌波凭此片夺得第十一届亚洲影展最佳女主角殊荣。一齣由家传户晓戏曲改编而成的民间故事：花木兰（凌波），及笄之年，精武艺，能织布。突厥入侵，兰父花弧被徵入伍，兰以父年事已高，便乔装男儿身，矢志代父从军，加入贺元帅（井淼）旗下，更认识同行战友李广（金汉）。征战十二年，兰官升都尉，甚获元帅器重，一夜，突厥王夜袭，被兰所擒，烽烟乃息。兰离军回乡侍奉老父，李广替元帅到花府提亲，方知同袍挚友，原来是女儿身，惊喜万分。

【百变凌波】

远山含笑~~一听到这首歌便不得不提到我们的梁兄哥-凌波小姐。原名君海棠，十四岁以「小娟」的艺名开始演出闽南语电影。一九六一年替邵氏「红楼梦」幕后代唱黄梅调，获李翰祥提拔主演「梁山伯与祝英台」，从此开啟她灿烂辉煌的演艺生涯。由於凌波是以女扮男装演出梁山伯，不便领取「最佳男主角奖」，於是金马奖评审当局巧立「最佳演技特别奖」名目颁奖给凌波。

她亦因此成为黄梅调电影的代表人物如：《七仙女》、《花木兰》、《宋宫秘史》、《鱼美人》、《三笑》等，而凌波又以《花木兰》荣登第十一届亚太影展最佳女主角。虽然她的男装扮相获得无数观眾的喜爱。凌波却也拍过不少非黄梅调电影，计有《万古流芳》、《烽火万里情》、、《哑巴与新娘》等。一九六五年，她凭《万古流芳》获得第十二届亚太影展的最佳才艺奖。一九六八年，她又以《烽火万里情》夺得第六届金马奖影后，从而更奠定了自己华语片第一女星的地位。
