影片改编自埃文.威尔斯发表于1993年的同名小说。主人公马克年龄不大但毒瘾很深，和他同住的西蒙、丹尼尔和埃莉森亦属同类。埃莉森的小女儿是她与另外三人中的一个所生。他们不想工作又不想失去失业津贴。马克在舞厅结识黛安，当晚到女孩家里过夜，但第二天早上看到黛安穿上校服才知道她才14岁。马克偷走汤米与丽兹做爱的录像带，丽兹却以为是汤米把带子卖了钱。马克被父母锁在家里戒毒，然后到伦敦谋生。但西蒙接踵而至。因为他受到了通缉。他们倒卖毒品，赚了一大笔钱。当天夜里，马克趁大家熟睡之机携款而逃，不过他把丹尼尔的一份留在了他的衣箱里......
