Emmet Rovers FC is a team in trouble. Every Sunday morning it is the same old story: they tog out, chase a football around a pitch and get beaten. Sometimes they get thrashed. For this rag tag side of amateurs, losing has become a habit. Now they are facing the final whistle with no manager, no ambition and pretty soon - If the developers have their way - no ground.

After yet another Sunday morning thrashing, Rovers' captain Bubbles (DAVID WILMOT) is ready to hang up his boots. Around him the team is threatening to implode. Violently. They are a disparate group in a desperate state: a hapless keeper, a hopeless defence, a strung-out striker, a bevy of bullies, a demotivated captain and, in the trees that border the ground, a raggedy man called Isaiah. He is prophesising a new dawn. No wonder the crows are cackling.

But with all hope about to be abandoned something happens.

Out of the urban wasteland of vandalised cars, muddy dreams and sliding tackles comes Rovers' would-be saviour, Walter Keegan (BRENDAN GLEESON). Keegan is a man with a vague past but a resolute future: someone who is determined to help Rovers win the Cup by whatever means possible. But the new manager has a mountain to climb and eleven players to convince that they - and he - can do it.

Through a combination of brains, brawn and unorthodox methods the mysterious man in the big coat pulls the team up by their bootstraps. Keegan has a galvanising affect on all eleven men: helping to restore their dignity and imbue them with a sense of destiny. Now the team has something to celebrate on the pitch and something to cheer in the Freeway Bar. Emmet Rovers are chasing championship glory and now even the crows are watching with interest.

STUDS, a feel-good action comedy follows the cup-run of an amateur football team and the magical effects of a new mysterious manager. It is directed by Paul Mercier (BEFORE I SLEEP) and produced by Fiach Mac Conghail and Cúán Mac Conghail of Brother Films. The cast includes Brendan Gleeson (I WENT DOWN; THE GENERAL; THE GANGS OF NEW YORK), David Wilmot (THE CLINIC), David Herlihy (VERONICA GUERIN) and Eamon Owens (THE BUTCHER BOY). The director of photography is Ronan Fox, production design is David Wilson and costume design is by Niamh Lunny.

STUDS has been funded under the Irish Film Board’s low budget initiative and has been co-financed by TV3, Moviehouse Entertainment and Buena Vista International (IRL).
