The New Rules of War, Swedish filmmakers Erik Gandini and Tarik Saleh set out to find out how a released prisoner was treated during his two-year stay at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. Since the prisoner, Mehdi Bivins, isn't talking about his experiences -- though he is clearly psychologically changed by it -- the documentarians must look to other sources, including a trip to Gitmo (the prison's nickname).

What they find there is U.S. military propaganda and stonewalling -- chirpy tours of the soldiers' recreational facilities on the island, parrotlike insistence that the prisoners are treated "humanely" -- but no contact with any of the prisoners. But Gandini and Saleh doggedly dig on, and what emerges is a very disturbing link between interrogation techniques developed at Gitmo and the atrocities uncovered in the scandal at the Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq.

Without any current images of actual prisoners to use, the filmmakers instead utilize other footage -- traveling (in cars, on planes, etc.), close-ups of Bivins' haunting face, the Abu Ghraib photos, video testimony from the ensuing investigation -- to help tell their story. Though not flashy or "big," GITMO is a stark, blunt, powerful indictment.
