In Burkina Faso, the initiatory brotherhood of Senoufo hunters perpetuates ist millennial traditions. It preaches freedom, equality,and understanding between all men, making no distinctions of class, birth,faith. Although the rifle has replaced the bow today, this has not compromised the balance of power between man and animal. When the quarry dies, it releases a vengerful force called nyama that will pursue the hunter all his life. Talismans,plants and magical prayers coupled with music, dancing and mime help the hunter to exorcise and tame this essence. Chanting singers armed only whith their word and their harp-lute, sing the praises of the most valourous men.
