Sixty-one years after the Rev. W. Awdry began publishing his books about the hard-working trains of Sodor Island, and 21 years after the children's series' debut on TV, Thomas the Tank Engine keeps chugging along his well-worn tracks, rolling into living rooms around the world to amuse young viewers with his low-key but still exciting adventures. There are few toddlers and preschoolers who don't know the colors of Thomas, James, Percy and the other locomotives, and many of the fans are as passionate for these characters as their dads are for sports teams—just try to drag a preschooler away from a Thomas railroad layout in a toy store. Producer Britt Allcroft Ltd. has wisely kept the franchise intact by changing virtually nothing about the look, pace and sound of the Thomas the Tank Engine vignettes over the past 21 years. Granted, the U.S. storyteller has changed—Michael Brandon of Dinotopia fame took over for Alec Baldwin in 2004—but the eye-rolling models, scenery, music and pace of the shorts remain as they were when Thomas first hit the rails in 1984. Four episodes involving minor crashes, acts of bravery and a little inconvenience for the human engineers are included here, topped off with sing-alongs and mind-teasers geared for 3-year-olds. The DVD-ROM takes little mouse-users to a Web link with coloring pages, wallpaper, a character gallery and a personalized story. The DVD and VHS packaging includes an in-pack wooden character engine toy from Learning Curve. Given the amount of repeat play these programs continue to receive, Thomas and his pals remain an excellent dollar value.
