Z-Bar Ranch, Strong City, Kansas, 1995
Photograph by Raymond Gehman
Cattle enjoy grazing on the tall grass prairie, where places like the Z-Bar Ranch set fires every spring. The fires are swift and so is the recovery; within a month cattle feast on the new grass.

A small boathouse in a field of flowers reminds one of the song by Patti Page:
"If you're fond of sand dunes and salty air,
Quaint little villages here and there;
You're sure to fall in love with Old Cape Cod."

Statue of Liberty Monument, New York Harbor, 1985
Photograph by Robb Kendrick
"'Liberty Enlightening the World.'

So (Frédéric-Auguste) Bartholdi named his copper-skinned goddess, lifting a torch and stepping out of broken shackles. Her tablet, a meaningful symbol to his fellow Freemasons, represents the rule of law and is inscribed in Roman numerals July 4, 1776. To hold this 151-foot [46-meter] statue against the Atlantic gales, he called on the brilliant bridge engineer Alexandre Gustave Eiffel for the tallest iron support of its day."

Despite the long exposures and complex processing, this technique made National Geographic magazine one of the first periodicals to bloom with color photography.
