Off Rongelap Atoll, Marshall Islands, Micronesia, 1996
Photograph by Emory Kristof
A photographer enjoys the protection of his shark cage as many healthy and hungry gray reef sharks patrol the area. Scientists were sent to Rongelap Atoll to study the lingering effects of a nuclear mega-bomb detonated by the United States there in 1954. Despite the disturbing number of abnormal births and other radiogenic illnesses affecting the human population, life below the surface of Rongelap seemed to be quite healthy in 1996.
(Text adapted from and photograph shot on assignment for, but not published in, "Testing the Waters of Rongelap," April 1998, National Geographic magazine.)

"A sea change in finance erodes hard-line socialism. Enterprising Cubans run their own shops and restaurants; while across the country resources beckon to foreign investors. U.S. dollars, legal since 1993, divide a once egalitarian society into those who have access to them and those who do not."

The livid light of late October illuminates Shishmaref Inlet, located just 21 miles (34 kilometers) south of the Arctic Circle. The Inuit living in the village of Shishmaref may soon be the first refugees of global warming. A young child carries a red balloon on October 1, the anniversary of the day communist leader Mao Zedong inaugurated the People's Republic of China in 1949. The proclamation came after half a century of conflict: the fall of the last Chinese emperor, the Japanese invasion, World War II, and a civil war between communist and nationalist forces. The second half of the 20th century was no more peaceful as the new government attempted to rebuild and unify the country under communism's strict guidelines.

Days of tedious planning and the careful placement of an infrared camera trap produced a rare image of an adult male African forest elephant. The shot was triggered as the bull rose from a dip in the Echira River.
