Sequim, Washington, Date Unknown
Photograph by Sam Abell
A horse stands in a field of wildflowers on the outskirts of Sequim, Washington. Although the Olympic Mountains are a rain trap for the moist Pacific winds that annually dump 140 inches (366 centimeters) of precipitation on the range's winward slopes, they also cast a "rain shadow" over the northeast side of the peninsula. This happy fact gives Sequim the nickname, "Sunny Sequim."

由于奥林匹斯山脉挡住太平洋水气,使得在其迎风面每年达到366厘米的降水量,它也照成了半岛的东北形成了“雨影区”,使得Sequim得到一个快乐的昵称“阳光Sequim”

Two burly Swiss men wrestle in front of a rapt audience during the Unspunnenfest. Held in and around Interlaken, this festival was first staged in 1805 on the grounds of Unspunnen Castle. The highlight of this celebration of folk dancing, yodeling, and Alpine sports is the Steinstossen, the throwing of the Unspunnen Stone, a 184-pound (83-kilogram) glacial boulder.
This year the Unspunnen Festival will be held September 1-3.

今年,Unspunnenfest庆典将在9月的1-3日举办。

This rotating storm that carries winds of at least 74 miles (119 kilometers) an hour is called a "hurricane" when it develops over the Atlantic and eastern Pacific Oceans. It is a "cyclone" when it forms over the Bay of Bengal and the northern Indian Ocean, and "typhoon" in the western Pacific.

This year, the Notting Hill Carnival will be held August 27 and 28.

Along the Indian River, Dominica, 1996
Photograph by Michael Melford
A bois mang tree grows along the banks of the Indian River. With a life span of 150 years, these 100-foot- (30-meter-) tall trees are supported by sinewy, buttressed roots that wind in and amongst themselves. The roots don't just support the riverbank, they are the riverbank, making the ground beyond look like a wall-to-wall carpet of wooden eels.

Cormorants recover in a Saudi pool after the first gulf war. Iraqis retreating from Kuwait damaged nearly 800 oil wells, poisoning 300 miles (483 kilometers) of coast and 600 square miles (966 square kilometers) of the Persian Gulf, including the breeding grounds of sea-faring cormorants and grebes. Six months after the destruction, coastlines were still black and desolate, proving that recovery would be slow for the fragile ecosystem.
