In 1960, well-known Israeli archeologist Yigael Yadin made a startling discovery in a cave in the Judean desert. He found a bag of letters written by the Jewish revolutionary leader, Shimon Bar-Kokhba, who led his supporters into a fight against the Romans in the year 132. Now, historian Richard Freund returns to the same cave with the most recent archeological tools, intent on finding out more about Kokhba's difficult life. Freund's discoveries shed new light upon one of Yadin's finds--a collection of bronze ritual objects--which Yadin originally thought to be stolen from the Romans. Freund's new, controversial theory suggests that the items may originally have come from the Second Temple in Jerusalem, an important site of Jewish worship wrecked by Romans 60 years before the Bar-Kokhba revolt. Through engaging debate concerning biblical archeology, ANCIENT REFUGE IN THE HOLYLAND will broaden viewer's understandings of what cave-life was like for Bar-Kokhba's followers.
