Satyajit Ray still rates as India's best known director, more than 10 years after his death. A stylish, thoughtful and political filmmaker, he finally achieved international recognition just a month before his death in 1992, when he received a Lifetime Achievement Oscar.

Abhijaan does not rate among his very best films, but Ray's high standards are evident from the very first shot - we see the main protagonist, Rana Pratap Narsingh (Chatterjee) through his reflection in a broken mirror. It's a metaphor for his life up until that point - his wife has left him, his attempts to form his own taxi service have failed and only his pride remains.
