Some days you should just stay in bed. On August 18, 1966, Australian troops stationed at Nui Dat in Vietnam were being drenched by torrential rain when a bolt of lightning hit their thunderbox.

Suddenly they were really in it, and that was before a small Aussie patrol stumbled into hundreds of Viet Cong troops who had dug themselves into the nearby Long Tan rubber plantation. Outnumbered 20 to one, the Australians faced a hail of bullets to complement the rain.

But the odd thing is it should have been the Vietnamese who stayed in bed that day, including one Mr Quang.

"I raised my pistol and shot twice before I was shot in the head," he says, showing off scars either side of his jaw. "The bullet went in one side and came out the other."

He has obviously made a remarkable recovery, unlike the scores who were killed.

With next Friday marking the 40th anniversary of the Battle at Long Tan, this 54-minute documentary, featuring interviews with survivors from both sides and archival film footage and photographs, is timely. Technically, it is very basic, with simple graphics and maps; nonetheless, it is compelling and significant.

Billed as an account of Australia's proudest Vietnam moment, it deserves attention, partly because Australia's Vietnam vets have been so comprehensively ignored, especially by Canberra.
