With the possible exception of the United States, no other country even comes close to matching the output of exploitation films from Italy. Every country has dabbled in exploitation at one time or another, but Italy’s contributions cover the entire spectrum that the term “exploitation” covers and contain many of the genre’s highpoints. One of the many Italian directors who was comfortable in any facet of exploitation cinema was Sergio Martino. Martino created some of the most well known films in the giallo, polizia, and horror genres. While not making terror filled mysteries, Martino and frequent leading lady Edwige Fenech made a few softcore sex comedies. One of the more popular ones was GIOVANNONA LONG-THIGH, which has been released as part of No Shame Film’s Sergio Martino Collection.

The Straccolone Cheese Company has a huge problem. A judge taking a fishing trip accidentally stumbled onto a huge river pollution problem originating at their factory. La Noce, the owner, knows exactly what he needs to do to get this fixed: bribe a public official to make the problem go away. He gives his bumbling assistant Albertini the task of finding one, but it proves impossible after they sample some of Straccolone’s awful cheese. With the help of an unscrupulous priest, they manage to find one lone cabinet minister who has not tried their tainted cheese, Pedico. Unfortunately for them, Pedico has a reputation for being pious and honest; exactly the qualities they aren’t looking for. By chance they soon learn that Pedico does have one vice: other men’s wives. Albertini comes up with an uncharacteristically brilliant plan to hire a beautiful girl to pretend to be La Noce’s wife and sleep with Pedico to ensure his help. He enlists the help of the beautiful Giovannova, aka “Coco”, to play the part of La Noce’s wife. It works like a charm; Pedico is unable to resist Giovannona’s charms. La Noce and Albertini’s grand scheme may be foiled by Giovannona’s pimp Robertuzzo and La Noce’s real wife Marta, who are on their way to put an end to their ruse.

Those of you who have seen any of the Martino-Fenech collaborations in other genres can expect the same high quality work, albeit put to much different uses here. Martino’s direction is still as stylish as it is in his giallo films, although used in a more subtle manner. As in all of her roles, Fenech is more than mere eye candy and her natural comedic abilities are put to good use. Along with co-star Pippo Franco, she keeps the film funny and moving at a frenetic pace. Franco plays everything for laughs and all of his scenes should leave you laughing. Despite the implications of the plot, there’s actually very little sex in the film. Instead, it’s a comedy of errors and miscommunication that harkens back more to the Hollywood comedies of the 1940s than to what one envisions when they think about “sexy comedies.”

No Shame Films always puts out great DVDs, particularly those in their Sergio Martino Collection. GIOVANNONA LONG-THIGH is practically flawless. It was remastered from the original negatives, so it’s doubtful the film looked this good even during its theatrical release. No Shame has included “The Revenge of Edwige’s Groovy Sexadelic Reel,” a continuation of the extra feature found on their release of UBALDA, ALL NAKED AND WARM. There’s also a new interview with Edwige Fenech, who appears to be complete immune to the affects of aging. She doesn’t look more than a few years older than she does in this film which was made about 34 years ago!

Many European sex comedies follow similar plots to GIOVANNONA LONG-THIGH. However, it would be impossible to find one that could claim such an impressive list of collaborators. You have Martino, one of Italy’s most talented exploitation directors, and Fenech, one of the screen’s most beautiful women. Throw in Pippo Franco and a strong supporting comedic cast and you pretty much have a can’t-miss comedy. This is a film that both exploitation fans and fans of mainstream comedy can equally enjoy.
