1978年丽德台拍了徐少强 苗可秀 马敏儿 的电视版本后,很受欢迎.
邵氏电影公司趁热,找来电视版的徐少强拍了电影版本

武当杂役云飞扬（徐少强）为掌门青松之私生子，限於门规，不能相认，青松只得隐藏身份暗中传授云武功。青松与无敌门主独孤无敌（万梓良）十年一战而败，无敌忌惮青松师兄燕冲天的天蚕功，期以两年后约青松再战！青松收傅玉书（刘永）为徒，怎知傅为逍遥谷主之孙，入武当就为报仇及偷学绝艺。傅使计刺杀青松，嫁祸云，并接任掌门。云被追杀，得无敌女儿凤（杨菁菁）相救，带往见其母沉夫人，得知凤是其同父异母之妹，更得天蚕功抄本！云最后练成天蚕功，清理门户，为父报仇，但仍要面对独孤无敌……
