　　英国导演托尼·理查森在《汤姆．琼斯》大获成功的十多年后，将英国名作家亨利．菲尔汀的另一本小说《约瑟安德鲁斯》搬上银幕，并且再度走古装讽刺喜闹剧的风格。将主人翁从一名卑微的仆人攀爬至贵妇布莉夫人的随从的奋斗史巨细无遗地作出交代，企图对时代和人性加以嘻笑怒骂，可惜这次已失去前作的神彩，处理上比较拘谨松散。不过摄影的表现仍相当出色。新进小生彼得．费斯与女猫王安．玛格丽特的搭配未能擦出男欢女爱的火花，使本片的可观性削弱不少。
