金刚是一只巨大的非洲猿猴,被拍电影的卡尔逮住并带到纽约。在那里,它成了供人观赏的怪物,但它却爱上了一个美女。为了追她,它逃脱主人的牢笼,横穿纽约街道,最终爬上当时刚建成的帝国大厦之尖顶,葬身于飞机的枪林弹雨。人们不禁问道:究竟是飞机杀了野兽,还是美女杀了野兽?

幕后制作


  梅里安?C?库珀对大猩猩的痴迷始于儿时拜读的法国探险家保罗?杜?沙伊鲁(Paul du Chaillu)所著的《赤道非洲探险记》,在拍摄1929年的《The Four Feathers》期间,库珀研究了非洲的狒狒部落,看过W?道格拉斯?伯登(W. Douglas Burden)的《科莫多龙》之后,库珀创作出描写非洲大猩猩大战科莫多龙的剧本大纲,并进而将一只大猩猩和一名孤身探险的女子确定为主人公,他希望以此平息媒体对他作品缺少浪漫元素的诟病。库珀将他的构思推荐给派拉蒙电影公司,当时正值大萧条初期,派拉蒙因不愿远赴非洲拍摄而放弃。1931年,大卫?O?塞尔兹尼克将库珀带到雷电华电影公司任他的私人助理,并承诺会让库珀拍摄属于自己的电影。库珀很快开始与塞尔兹尼克一道筹备《最危险的游戏》,当影片开拍后,库珀注意到公司正在斥巨资打造的奇幻片《Creation》,片中一队游客因海难而登上了恐龙岛,虽然威利斯?奥布莱恩(Willis O'Brien)制作的定格动画没能打动库珀,但他发现可以借用片中的科莫多龙、昂贵的布景和《最危险的游戏》中的丛林摄影棚。库珀想到为大猩猩取名金刚,并让它死在帝国大厦。

  雷电华电影公司起初对影片小心翼翼,直到看过菲伊?雷、罗伯特?阿姆斯特朗和布鲁斯?卡伯特的试镜以及奥布莱恩的恐龙模型后才给予充分认可,因为享有特权,所以库珀叫停《Creation》,该片剧组转而为本片效力。库珀找来英国畅销书作家埃德加?华莱士负责本片剧本乃至小说,他深知华莱士的商业号召力,希望用改编自埃德加?华莱士的小说标榜影片。与库珀和奥布莱恩协商之后,华莱士于1932年元旦开始着手影片剧本,可当剧本初稿进入修改阶段时,华莱士却于2月2日猝然辞世,虽然随后接手的几位编剧放弃了华莱士剧本中的很多内容,但为了遵守承诺,库珀还是让华莱士的名字出现在编剧名单中。

  在物色扮演女主人公的人选时,库珀希望启用金发美女,以与大猩猩的黑色毛皮构成鲜明对比,桃乐茜?乔丹、珍?哈露和金格尔?罗杰斯曾先后备选,而最后的当选者却是需戴金色假发出演本片的菲伊?雷。在出演1928年的默片《结婚进行曲》之前,加拿大女演员菲伊?雷在好莱坞一直默默无闻,她决定出演本片更多的是因为库珀的热情。库珀曾称与雷演对手戏的是好莱坞最高大、最黑的男演员,原以为是克拉克?盖博的雷后来看到金刚爬上帝国大厦的图片才恍然大悟。


花絮

·岛上的金刚模型高18英寸,导演梅里安·C·库珀认为出现在纽约的金刚应该更高大,于是将模型高度增至24英寸。



·两位导演梅里安·C·库珀和欧尼斯特·B·舍德萨克都曾做过摔跤手,两人亲自为特效公司完成了霸王龙与金刚之间的搏斗动作。



·金刚的咆哮由狮和虎的吼叫声混合而成。
