Their images are painted on the rocks, but their spirits are in the monsoon clouds that blow in from the north. They are the Wandjina, the guardians of one of the last great wilderness areas left on earth - the Kimberley region of North West Australia. Everything in the Kimberley has adapted to live with the cycles of returning water. The coast is ruled by some of the most ferocious tides in the world, and everything has adapted to the twice daily cycle of high tide and low tide. The inland is ruled by a different rhythm. The plateau of the Kimberley is a land of fresh water, of falling water and often of no water at all - it is the land of the Wet and the Dry. Here, under the gaze of the Wandjina, all life is controlled by the seasons and has adapted to survive the long periods of drought between the monsoonal rains.
