　　Sydney Schanberg is a New York Times journalist convering the civil war in Cambodia. Together with local representative Dith Pran, they cover some of the tragedy and madness of the war. When the Americans forces leave, Dith Pran sends his family with them, but stays behind himself to help Schanberg cover the event. As an American, Schanberg won't have any trouble leaving the country, but the situation is different for Pran; he's a local, and the Khmer Rouge are moving in.
1972年，纽约时报记者辛尼在柬埔寨采访，柬埔寨人潘迪是他的翻译兼助手，两人在战火纷飞中结下了深厚的友谊。1975年，红色高棉占领金边，辛尼进入法国领事馆后安全撤退，潘迪因为没有护照而被捕。潘迪在柬共的劳动改造政策中历经劫难，目睹了红色高棉政权的残暴血腥，1978年，越共入侵柬埔寨，潘迪趁机逃亡到泰国边境，与一直在寻找他的老朋友辛尼重逢。
　　
时代背景：
　　1975年，红色高棉占据金边，实行其领导人波尔布特的共产主义理想：消灭城市，把金边及其他城市的数百万居民，无论老幼病残，一律驱赶到农村；消灭阶级差异，对有产者、知识分子、教徒进行思想改造，改造不好的，一律消灭肉体；党内大清洗，大批干部及下属被处死。在波尔布特不到四年的执政时间里，柬埔寨的人口减少了三分之一，累计有两百多万人被杀害。

红色高棉占领了金边，DithPran无私地帮助着Sydney，使的他多次命在旦夕，却又化险为夷。（电影画面非常残酷和真实，我几乎忘记了它是电影，而是记录片！）。后来DithPran和Sydney，以及另外一些美国记者躲进法国使馆，他们给DithPran拍了照片，伪造假美国护照，试图把DithPran解救到美国与家人团圆（DithPran妻儿在红色高棉占领之前，已经送到美国）。可是因为药水的问题，照片居然恢复成一团黑。Sydney等人回到美国。而DithPran被迫留下来，在红色高棉的统治下，历经苦难。（同样真实的让人战栗！）

电影中，最让人令人不寒而栗，头皮发麻的一幕是，DithPran试图逃跑，经过“人骨河”，不小心掉进河中，抓着一具具的人骨才爬上岸！（故事背景：1975-78年红色高棉统治时期，进行了种族屠杀，死亡人数估计在100万！而柬埔寨总人口当时才7，8百万！屠杀人口的尸体丢入河中，行成了人骨河。）

更触目惊心的那些在PolPot（波尔布特）统治下，幼小孩子思想被洗脑后，那些凶恶的眼神。。看不到一丝善良，是那种比冰更冷的眼神。。他们/她们举枪、挥刀杀人，毫不手软。那才是多大的孩子啊。。。

故事的最后，DithPran于1978年逃到泰国，1979年与Sydney重聚，后去了美国，与家人团聚，在《纽约时报》当摄影记者。

另，该影片获得三项奥斯卡金奖（1985）。DithPran的扮演者是华裔医生吴汉。关于吴汉，我在网上找到的一些他个人资料：

吴汉原是柬埔寨红色高棉恐怖统治时代的华侨医生，他逃过赤棉的血腥大屠杀，辗转流亡美国。一九八四年好莱坞拍摄电影「杀戮战场」，吴汉因缘际会在片中轧上一角，饰演为美国媒体工作的柬埔寨摄影记者，由于角色诠释刻画入微，一炮而红，获奥斯卡最佳男配角奖。

最可怕的一个消息是：

一九九六年二月二十五日，吴汉被人发现陈尸洛杉矶华埠寓所外的车棚内，身上有致命枪伤，凶嫌华裔美人陈德顺被控一级谋杀与抢劫罪，获判监禁五十六年至终身，正在坐牢服刑当中。
