As well as providing a good look at Denis Kang’s personal style, My Mixed Martial Arts is an excellent one-DVD introduction to MMA. This is the video I wish I had had when I first started training.

Production
Stephan Kesting handled the production of My Mixed Martial Arts and provides the same careful attention to detail as on his other videos.

The instruction is set in a boxing ring, and while the location limits camera range--giving things an almost claustrophobic feel--the two camera angles used catch all the technical details. The audio and video are both clean and the editing is tight so there’s nothing to get in the way of learning.

There is also professional music provided by the band Adema. It makes a nice change from the typical Power-Point-Presentation schlock you get on too many instructionals these days.

The DVD itself is well laid out with chapter breaks for each of the individual techniques. The main menu breaks things down into Standup & Takedowns, The MMA Bottom Game, The MMA Top Game, and Credits, Out-takes and Tournament Matches. Each submenu provides descriptive titles for the chapters, not just generic numbers, making it easy to find what you’re looking for.

Instruction
Denis Kang does all the instruction on My Mixed Martial Arts. His style is direct and concise, here’s what I do, here’s why I do it, and here are the details to make it work.

One of the reasons I’d recommend this as an introduction to MMA is that Mr. Kang fully integrates striking into his instruction. That might sound like an obvious thing to do (I think it is) but so many instructionals gloss over it. How many times have I heard a video instrutor say “Just be carefull of your opponent’s punches here, you don’t want to get hit!” then proceed to demonstrate the exact same techniques they use in sport jiu-jitsu. Its as though you just need to be a bit more careful when striking is involved. It drives me nuts! MMA is not just rolling with a couple strikes thrown in. Striking changes everything.

At each stage in the game--standup, top position and bottom position--Denis Kang uses striking to enhance his grappling and grappling to enhance his striking. That’s the way it should be.

Content
My Mixed Martial Arts covers the whole range of competition, from standing to the ground and back to standing again. Obviously, you can’t provide comprehensive coverage in one DVD (or ten for that matter) but My MMA does provide a complete, albeit limited, set of skills. Take a look at the contents.
