◎简　　介　

The sleepy country town of St. Helen is divided by more than  the
river that runs through it:  it抯 also split along deep  lines of
class and religion. The inhabitants may have learned to live with
these differences,  yet a  simmering undercurrent  of tension  is
always present. That tension threatens to explode when  seventeen
-year-old Catholic Peggy MacGibbon falls in love with Tom Quayle,
a young and energetic radical ?and a Protestant.
In this epic mini-series based on the best-selling novel by James
Aldridge,  the  joy   and  passion  of   teenage  love  is   soon
overshadowed by bigoted disapproval. The harshest words come from
Peggy抯 father, Lockie, a  drinker and gambler tormented  by dark
secrets. Finn McCoil is  also resentful of Peggy抯  affection for
the  Protestant Tom  - and  grows eager  to teach  him a  painful
lesson  about stepping  outside his  class. Tom抯  stern father,
lawyer  Edward  Quayle,  finds  himself  drawn  into  this bitter
struggle as well and what  began as an innocent love  affair soon
becomes the focal point for  a violent conflict that will  tear a
town apart.
