Directed by Lee Chang Jae, In Between is a revealing and fascinating documentary that delves into the lives of Korea's modern-day shamans and an age-old culture that has existed for thousands of years. It is believed that shamans are chosen by spirits to act as a medium between the two worlds. Through their connection with gods and spirits, they are able to heal and communicate with the departed. Shamans, however, are apparently marked with mysterious, incurable illnesses, and carry this pain until they are ready to represent and receive the spirits.
The filmmakers spent a year following female shaman Lee Hae Gyong, documenting her daily life and shamanistic rituals. Amongst her encounters include a woman with leukemia, a little boy who sees ghosts, and a young woman struggling with the revelation that she is destined to be a shaman. In order to fulfill their roles, shamans must give up their own identities and live as outsiders. Despite their special status, their lives are tinged with tragedy for they are either here nor there, but In Between. No matter where one's beliefs may lie, inspiration and humanity can be drawn from this sensitive documentary.
