小镇上来了一个名叫约翰的中年聋哑人，他在一间礼品店工作，替客人在礼品上刻字。约翰跟世界的沟通，全凭他的眼睛。更重要的沟通，是观察人的心情。他租了一个小房间，屋主的女儿情窦初开，但屡次恋爱失败；跟父母又有代沟，终日郁郁寡欢。他安慰她，彼此建立友谊。但他只是她苦闷时的消遣，有新男友后，就将他拋到脑后。当他到诊所看病时，认识了主诊的黑人医生，医生跟女儿的关系势很差，他努力地替他们调解，父女冰释前嫌，便再没有找他倾诉。约翰还有一个智力只有三岁的聋哑人朋友住在另一个市镇。他原以为同命人可以理解他，但也同样如此。回到家里，屋主女儿又再次闹情绪，向约翰大发脾气，本来为了逗她开心送上礼物，但她把门轰上。约翰把礼物放在门边，走回自己房间吞枪自尽。

这部影片原先由约瑟夫·史崔克执导，但他中途退出才转由罗伯特·埃利斯·米勒接手拍摄。影片讲述了一个善良的聋哑人帮助身边有困难的人却在自己又困难的时候却得不到帮助，最后自尽的故事。一个聋哑人却主动地用比常人困难的方式与人交流，帮助身边的人相互沟通，而拥有最健全的交流条件的人却根本丧失这些应有的能力。影片让主人公在寻求最后的温暖失败之后绝望地自杀，对人际关系的冷漠提出了严酷的警告。但主人公在之前所做的种...
