◎简　　介　

Rock Fresh is a pretty good documentary of graffiti artists in LA. It features 3 or 4 artists and what they do. It follows these artists walking a line between street art and professional aspirations, including gallery showings (including one in the recently closed *sniff, sniff* 33 1/3 Books) and clothing lines. They discuss the difficulties of being graffiti artists in a world that is less-than-appreciative of their trade, as well as balancing "street cred" with making a living. It shows a good cross-section of the town, from central to west to south and east.

The film even interviews a anti-graffiti advocate who has little good to say about the art. Maybe for legal reasons, it does not show any of them actually doing any illegal walls, so if you want to see that you'll be disappointed. This makes a bit of a disconnect in the film, as the anti-graffiti advocate is talking out against types of art that the film itself doesn't really cover. You'll see more galleries and hand-painted hats than street pieces.

One problem of the film, which definitely gives it an amateurish quality, is the text narration that runs throughout the film. This adds nothing to the film and is filled with pointless pseudo-deep thoughts ("the only constant is change" etc). It seems that the makers definitely had a point of view to impart. Luckily, the interviewees share few of these platitudes and when at one point an interviewee is pressed to give a political opinion about the mix of consumerism and art, he sloughs it off by saying, "There's a problem with that?'

This is definitely not one of my favorite films of all time, but it is an entertaining look into the world of legitimate artists doing what is still an illegitimate art.
