"El Vampiro" offers almost nothing new to the vampire myth, but is entertaining enough. Almost, I said, because apparently this was the first vampire film in which the vampire has fangs. Germán Robles is absolutely no competition in the acting department to Christopher Lee, but he was sporting fangs beforehand, so this flick deserves a little attention. Still, hes one of the dullest and most devoid of charisma vampires ever on screen. You know somethings wrong with a monster flick when the two lovers are more interesting than the actual monster. "El Vampiro" could've been much better if they'd recast the lead a bit.

That being said, "El Vampiro" is a surprisingly competent little horror story, much more surprising when taken into consideration that most people associate Mexican schlock with masked wrestlers. Its beautifully photographed, full of eerie dark shadows and Gothic fogs. Its nothing new, but "El Vampiro" follows the formula very well. Not as much a classic as some drive-in fans have made it out to be, "El Vampiro" is still recommended for classic horror fans.
