New York -- The Volkswagen Golf was named World Car of the Year Thursday by a panel of journalists worldwide, edging out two other small cars.
The Golf beat the Ford Fiesta and Toyota iQ in an announcement made here at the New York International Auto Show.
The Golf VI has a 158-horsepower, 1.4 liter turbo engine. It's also available in a 2.0-liter diesel version. It has a VW Scirocco-style grille and larger tail lights than the previous generation.
Other semi-finalists included the Honda Fit, Jaguar XF, Fiat 500, BMW 7 Series and Audi A4.
Ford is bringing the Fiesta to the U.S. market. A group of 100 European-built Fiestas arrived in the United States last week. Ford is loaning the vehicles to young people who will post videos about their experiences.
The Toyota iQ is a 1.0-liter super fuel efficient hatchback with very thin seats that gets 54 miles per gallon. |
