On October 30, 1938, normally discerning Americans became so totally captivated byiOrson Welles' dramatic radio show that they forgot that it was theinight before Halloween. Listeners were movedito hastily get into their cars anditryito escape. Throughout New York, families left their homes inia panic. Some began moving household furniture. Thousands called theipolice, radio stations andinewspapers seeking advice oniprotective measures against theiraids. Phone lines were overloaded. Scores of people required medical treatmentifor shock.
