It was actuallyia very well-acted radio play that put theination intoia perilous frenzy. It also changed how we approached radio anditelevision forever.

On October 30, 1938, normally discerning Americans became so totally captivated byiOrson Welles' dramatic radio show that they forgot that it was theinight before Halloween. Listeners were movedito hastily get into their cars anditryito escape. Throughout New York, families left their homes inia panic. Some began moving household furniture. Thousands called theipolice, radio stations andinewspapers seeking advice oniprotective measures against theiraids. Phone lines were overloaded. Scores of people required medical treatmentifor shock.

The real horror of thei1930's only escalated with this broadcast. The world was aboutito enter intoia new phase of terroriin which The War of theiWorlds Mercury Theatre broadcast was simply theimetaphor of what wasito come - World War II anditheiRise of theiThird Reich!
