The true story of the British explorer Robert Falcon Scott and his ill-fated expedition to try to be the first man to discover the South Pole - only to find that the murderously cold weather and a rival team of Norwegian explorers conspire against him.

1911年11月1日，Scott船长从南极洲边缘的Hut Point起程，率领一个五人探险队，开始穿越南极洲的莽莽雪原，向南极极点进军。Scott13岁就开始了他的海上生涯，此前在英国海军服役，曾随Discovery探险船到达南极冰缘地区。当时Scott使用的交通工具是耐寒的西伯利亚矮马拉的雪橇，而Amundsen的五人探险队却选择了爱基斯摩狗拉的雪橇。在南极洲的暴风雪和严寒的袭击之下，Scott的西伯利亚矮马一匹匹倒下，最后，不得不靠人力拉着雪橇，一步步摸索前进。而Amundsen的爱基斯摩狗却对与北极气候相近的南极洲非常适应，只有少数死亡成了探险队的食物。因此，Amundsen探险队的行进速度大大快于Scott，他们于1911年12月14日抵达南极极点。经过坚苦卓绝的努力，Scott一行于1912年的1月17日终于到达了南极极点，可令他们失望的是，南极极点已经飘扬着一面挪威国旗。那一刻的Scott船长心情是十分复杂的在他的日记中，他写到：" The Pole, yes, but under very different circumstances to those expected...Great God! But this is an awful place and terrible enough for us to have laboured to it without the reward of priority. " 该回家了，等待他们的是1766英里的回程，虽然来的路上，每隔70英里，他们就设一个储有食物和燃料的补给点，但那1912年初的南极洲却迎来了狂暴的北风和异常的低温。凛冽的寒风直扑他们的双目，这使他们的前进比来时更加困难，越来越低的温度更是大大损伤了他们本已十分疲惫的身体，因此他们的前进速度也越来越慢。3月20日，在离名为"One Ton Depot"的补给点只有11英里的地方，由于肆虐的暴风雪，他们再也无力前进。燃料和食物逐渐耗光，同伴们一个个死去，在他1912年3月29日最后的笔记和遗书中，他写到 " After all we are setting a good example to our countrymen, if not by getting into a tight place, by facing it like men when we were there". 南极洲的暴风雪掩住了Scott探险队的帐篷，只到当年的11月12日，他们才被搜寻他们的人们找到。
