I used to wonder how Paul the Apostle felt the first time he saw Jesus do his shtick. Then I heard Bill Hicks for the first time, and I was a flash-point convert. An epiphany, if you will. Fast as God on a hotrod, matters that had previously perplexed me began making sense. Hicks' commentary on society, the war on drugs, mall culture, smoking and right-wing politics struck a chord, dismantled the system and led me to clarity. Shot in '89 in Austin, Texas, the Sane Man video shows a sober Hicks, whose dry state only made his comedy every bit more bitter, scathing and just plain wrong. But how can a man who speaks of a prepubescent Debbie Gibson / Tiffany tryst, then humps a stool for emphasis really be wrong?
