Some say that Hester Prynne, the heroine of Nathaniel Hawthorne's "The Scarlet Letter", which is set in Puritan New England in the year 1642, is a modern woman. She is a single parent, raises a difficult child, and works at many odd jobs to make ends meet. She arrives at Massachusetts Bay Colony alone. Her husband has sent her ahead of him with plans to join her at a later date. Two years pass, and he never arrives. Though there is no evidence, the townspeople believe him to be deceased. In her husband's absence, Hester bears a child. Because she will not reveal the name of the father, she is condemned to stand on a platform in the center of town for three hours while holding her baby. There, all the townspeople can freely ridicule her. Hester is also condemned to wear a scarlet letter "A" on her clothing forever. She is an adulterer.


Since all societies bind us in some way, the novel is astoundingly timely and inspires reflection on our own imprisonments. Do we imprison ourselves with our ideas or the ideas of others? Are our confinements solid or liquid? How likely is it that we can break free from our own imprisonments?


Nathaniel Hawthorne had a powerful disdain for the acts and deeds of his Puritan ancestors. His great-great grandfather was one of the judges of the Salem Witch Trials of 1692. He is the Judge Hathorne that appears in Arthur Miller's "The Crucible'. Nathaniel Hawthorne felt a strong urge to distance himself in some way from his ancestors, so he added a "w" to his name. But not even a "w" and two hundred years could distance him enough, and so he wrote The Scarlet Letter. It is the same Puritan ethic that bounded his ancestors, that binds Hester Prynne, Reverend Arthur Dimmesdale, Roger Chillingworth, and Little Pearl.
