本片导演兼编剧潘垒, 原为台北诗集主编, 可谓文学导演, 连他执导的电影, 无论是文艺或武侠片, 亦彷佛有一份诗意, 这正是其个人风格. 本武侠片的故事描述, 南剑丁梦豪(鲁平)号称「天下第一剑」, 江湖剑士多伤其剑下, 但一日, 丁竟败於路过的怪道人烟杆下; 为履行诺言, 乃屈从怪道人苦修三年. 期间, 丁不胜其苦, 雕山门前巨石, 竟学成石工, 实为怪道人磨其锐气, 而暗中教化也. 三年期满, 怪道人临别赠言, 谓其如欲「生」, 则必先「死」...
