The guy has always had a preternatural ability to channel R&B and rock legends like Sly Stone, Jimi Hendrix, and James Brown (cf. this performance's amazing "Money Don't Matter 2 Night/The Work"); now he's added more sophisticated flavors to the mix as well, ranging from George Benson to Steely Dan and Weather Report, and all without sacrificing his own voice. Add to that covers of the Ohio Players' "Love Rollercoaster" and Led Zeppelin's "Whole Lotta Love" (really), all played by Prince and his smokin', skin tight band, and what you get is one of the best shows of 2002, or any other year. Extraordinary.

1958年6月7日出生的音樂奇才，行事、作風、服裝怪異的王子來自明尼蘇達州的雙子城明尼亞波利。八○年代叱吒歌壇，不僅專輯張張經典、單曲首首流行，全盛時期自創唱片品牌Paisley Park，相關藝人或團體如Vanity 6、Sheila E、The Time、The Family...當時都是王子大家庭（或稱王子幫）的一員，還有他伴奏樂隊The Revolution裡的吉他與鍵盤手後來離團自組Wendy & Lisa；加上主演【紫雨】、【Under The Cherry Moon】...多部電影使王子的聲勢鼎沸。

「The Very Best Of Prince」是王子2001年發行的精選，收錄17歌曲，包括成名曲I Wanna Be Your Lover、商業上第一張成功的專輯「1999」裡的同名曲和第一首前十名單曲Little Red Corvette。接著就是從巔峰之作、蟬聯專輯榜24週冠軍的「Purple Rain」選出的4首單曲，包括1984年年終冠軍When Doves Cry。再來是由自己唱片廠牌出版的首張單曲Raspberry Beret。Kiss大家應該都很熟稔，1988年湯姆．瓊斯曾經翻唱成舞曲，是舞廳必播曲。王子很少與他人對唱，You Got The Look是個例外，這位幸運的女歌手是來自蘇格蘭的席娜．伊斯頓 (Sheena Easton)，他們倆後來也傳出戀曲。還有就是進入九○年代之後王子的代表作，也是唯一冠軍曲Cream。最後一首則是收錄在Diamonds And Pearls專輯裡的Money Don't Matter 2 Night，以往未曾收錄在任何精選中的。

或許你認為王子行為荒誕、奇裝異服、歌詞內容淫穢，可是他的確一度主導八○年代流行音樂，這張「The Very Best Of Prince」可以帶你重溫王子黃金時期的所有暢銷歌曲。
