Dan Aykroyd, to me, is like an anchovy: A much acquired taste. I haven't acquired a taste for him, though. While I thought he was very good in "Driving Miss Daisy", that was the first time I saw him in a different light than I had previously seen him on television. As one of the original members of Saturday Night Live, Mr. Aykroyd has a following of legions of fans who loved him for his Blues Brothers routines. I never really thought he was THAT funny. I was in my teens when SNL first appeared and even then, I thought he was pretty much of a dope. But I do give him props for marrying one of the most beautiful women in world, Donna Dixon, from tv's "Bosom Buddies".
Okay, like all of the other SNL collections of Best Of's, this DVD concentrates of Aykroyds funnier skits but most are a crap shoot. He does an amazing imitation of Tom Snyder from the old Tomorrow late night show (which I still miss) and is at his funniest in two clips: One, the most overshown clip on TV comedy clip shows, where he portrays Julia Child in a delicious parody where, when boning a chicken, he severs his finger with a knife with blood spurting in exagerrated extremes all over the kitchen. C'mon, can you honestly tell me that you have never seen this skit? The second funniest is where he plays Fred Garvin, an aging male prostitute, in what must have been a risque AND risky comedy sketch in its day. Along with client Margot Kidder, he gets the laughs as an older gigolo who is wearing several trusses. Watching him pose for her in what he perceives to be sexy is a riot. Also funny, but not overly so, is the skit where he plays Beldar Conehead and another famous scene where he is hawking a blender called the Bassomatic where he shoves bass into the blender and then Laraine Newman happily slurps it up saying "ow, that is fresh bass" It merely made me sick in the same way I get nauseated when I watch "Fear Factor".

No doubt about it, Dan Aykroyd can be funny at times but with his spotty record, if he was in sports, he would definitely be a benchwarmer. But he has paid his dues and is a bonafide comic star so I cannot take away that from his accomplishments---I just wish the Lions Gate would select funnier clips for these Best Of collections.
