◎简 介

Dansh is a psychological thriller based on ‘Death and the Maiden’ a thriller directed by Roamn Polanski and starred actress Sigounery Weaver in the lead.

Written by Anish Ranjan and directed by debutante Kanika Verma, Dansh stars Sonali Kulkarni and Kay Kay.

The film stems out from the battle between Mizo National Front and Indian Government some thirty-years ago.

The people of Mizoram (then a part of Assam) felt discontented with the Indian Government and made loud their rebellion by means of violence and agitation until a peace treaty was signed between MNF and the Indian Government in 1986.

Mathew (Kay Kay) is the MNF spokesman, an architect of the peace treaty. Maria (Sonali Kulkarni), his wife, is a victim of the atrocities inflicted by the Indian army in the past. In spite of being tortured by them, Maria still believed that peace would put an end to all the killing.

The look in Maria’s eyes is haunting. We find out later why she has that look.

Mathew arrives late - he had a flat tire in the rain & luckily got a ride home from a neighbor, Dr. John Sanga (Aditya Shrivastav).

The tension between Maria & Mathew is palpable. She asks him about the news she heard on the radio before he arrived home - that he has been appointed to head a commission on human rights. Maria’s problem with all this is that her torture didn’t end in death. She is still living with it. It is obvious after their discussion that she is a survivor of such terror. Mathew tells her that this new appointment can be important, a blessing - he tells her that he will get her justice - that he will get the committee to eventually look at ALL the cases- living & dead. It’s obvious that he is trying to right some kind of wrong.

Dr. John Sanga comes to the house after quite awhile - to return the flat tire that Mathew left in his trunk. He tells him what a big fan he is of his - that he heard on the radio about his appointment to the commission for the human rights committee. Mathew who is impressed by John’s personality invites him at his place for a drink.

John moved to Mumbai after his father; a former DIG was killed by the MNF to start life afresh.

Maria gets a vague feeling that John is the man who raped her at the Army camp. Though blindfolded, Maria strongly believes that John is her culprit. Following her instincts she tortures John compelling to confess his heinous sin.

Maria asks Mathew to kill John who has been denying the blame throughout. His dilemma mounts as the story moves further.

Is John really the rapist or innocent? Is it okay for Maria to trust her instinct? Or is it the fragment of her imagination trying to avenge her rape by punishing John? What should Mathew do?

Full points to Kanika to trudge a path seldom chosen. Though the drama tends to stagnate as you become restless for the plot to unfold, the truth when comes fore is shocking.

Dansh cannot be classified an arthouse or commercial cinema. The influx of Multiplexes in big cities has brought alive a breed of audience who want to watch different cinema. Once they used to frequent theatre. Directors like ‘Kanika Verma’ are thrying to woo such audience with movies like ‘Dansh’.

The budget is small. Most of the action takes place overnight inside a small house. The movie is experimental with talk-heavy material and relies on acting by lead protagonists.

Maria, the main character, is wonderfully done by Sonali. She has a very difficult task. To play someone like that who has survived such inhuman torture has to be extremely difficult. Buried alive with this terror & terrible humiliation, she has to dredge it all up to work through this and to confront her past- always present, but made manifest in the person of her torturer, now there in the flesh. A moment that she has no doubt wanted and dreaded for many years. She explains that perhaps her worst fault was that she wanted to live.

A restrained Kay Kay is perfect match for Sonali’s hyper act. Aditya Shrivastav makes his presence felt in a role which was once played by Ben Kingsley.

After rib-tickling ‘No Entry’, if you are in mood to watch something different then settle for nothing less then ‘Dansh’.

SPOILER

Part of what makes this movie SOO interesting are the characters & the wonderful way they are so multi-dimensional. Maria isn’t just some crazy woman with a vendetta. Mathew isn’t just some gentle ineffectual man. John isn’t just some evil man with a family.

Maria, the main character, is wonderfully done by Kulkarni. She has a very difficult task. To play someone like that who has survived such inhuman torture has to be extremely difficult. Her talking it out in the movie is her “therapy.” Buried alive with this terror & terrible humiliation, she has to dredge it all up to work through this and to confront her past- always present, but made manifest in the person of her torturer, now there in the flesh. A moment that she has no doubt wanted and dreaded for many years. She explains that perhaps her worst fault was that she wanted to live.

Kay Kay Menon does a fine job as her husband. The man still trying to make up for what his wife has been through and what he’d done. In the 2 months she was being tortured, he thought she was dead & was actually having an affair for a month with another woman. (Is it an affair if you think your spouse is dead?) Imagine her, after that torture, all that pain she took, to save HIS life, they were after him, his name & location- coming “home” to him in bed with another woman. All of this makes for a multi-layered Mathew. A man conflicted and also so weak in comparison with a wife that has literally been through hell and back.

Aditya Srivastava is wonderful as Dr. Sanga. I found him utterly convincing. I vacillated between thinking him innocent & guilty. It was hard to decide since Maria seems unbalanced & a little more than “touched.” There were little clues along the way. But it still is so hard to believe that anyone civilized could do such things. In the end, when he does make a sincere confession (I warned you about the spoiler!) it is fascinating. The writing is so well done. The observation that normal, even remarkable people, can delude themselves into heinous crimes against humanity is what is really scary. If everyone that did things like this were monsters or easily dismissed as purely evil, then it would have no more moral significance than an earthquake or any other “natural” disaster.

He recounts how he “fought it.” How he was good at first, but then he gave in. How people were laid out on tables, helpless in the bright light, like meat. He was lost, he got curious about how much pain someone can take. He admitted that he grew to love it & that he was sorry when it ended. Sound familiar? Like another regime? In a way, I think it would’ve been fascinating for the movie to explore more the mind of Dr. Sanga. After all, we all wonder how someone could do things like that.
