Gallagher is well known by many people, mostly for his trademark in the Sledge-O-Matic, a large wooden hammer used to smash various objects such as fruit. He has been doing comedy for a long time, with his first major concert in 1980 and him releasing on average one special per year in the ?0s and ?0s. Anchor Bay has released two previous sets, one with eight and one with eleven of the specials, but Gallagher - The Sledge-O-Matic Collection gets you just about every special in one set for a total of fourteen. The set is definitely no frills, there are no bonus features or even a booklet included, just four DVDs in a box, which I don抰 really mind myself since extras never thrilled me that much.
Gallagher was a good comedian in the early ?0s, a great comedian in the late ?0s and early ?0s. After that it went quite a bit downhill, fortunately this set has the best stuff included with just a fraction of the later concerts that weren抰 as good. The stage still stays messy on almost every special, with all sorts of produce falling into his sights as well as plenty of other gags to get the audience messy. There a couple of tips that will help you to prune away the worse parts of the specials, they hold true on most instances of their occurrences. The first is singing, just skip right through it as you aren抰 missing a thing and they are seldom if ever funny. The second is roller skates, just about every concert he has them on ends up being a good one. The third is concerts with him wearing a large wireless microphone on a necklace, most of them are rarely funny.

This set includes a total of fourteen of Gallagher抯 specials from 1981 all the way to 1999. Some of the episodes seem to have been edited from the originals, but overall the episodes look to be complete with little changed, and they do show their age. If you weren抰 around for the politics of the specific time that the special was produced, then many of the jokes will seem less or even not at all funny to you. There are plenty of worthwhile comedy to enjoy here, but given the dated material many of the younger generation will fail to catch the humor. If you remember the ?0s episodes then this set is definitely worthwhile to pick up, just keep in mind that Gallagher is best in small doses, and clocking in at over twelve and a half hours this set has plenty of small doses for hours of entertainment at a modest cost. No matter how much you may love Gallagher though, this would be a very large pill to swallow in one sitting. The set is best watched in order of release by years, why the discs have them in this order is anyone抯 guess.
